November 5th, 2009 Disney and More – for Adults

The kids are back in school so the lines are short, the weather is a dream of warm days and cool nights and there are great deals for Florida residents at shops, restaurants and attractions all around the Orlando area. Which makes this just a terrific time of year to be visiting Tropical Palms.

You can start your trip by tasting your way around the world at the Food and Wine Festival in Disney World’s Epcot Center. Twenty-five international kiosks are serving up tapas size portions of delicious delicacies from 6 continents. And because it’s Epcot, there are concerts, seminars and special events. But hurry, it’s over on the 8th.

Can’t make it in time for the food festival? No problem. Cirque du Soleil® – La Nouba is performed twice nightly Tuesdays through Saturdays. This extraordinary event features a cast of 65 acrobats, athletes and performance artists from 15 countries. It’s a “theatrical ride for the senses” that makes “the impossible, possible” and promises to leave you, like its thousands of fans, in awe of what you’ve seen.

November’s also the month 150 award-winning artists from around the world gather for the Festival of Masters show and when 128 of the world’s best golfers tee up at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic (Nov 12-15). And that’s just the beginning of the wonderful entertainment that happens everyday at Disney World.

When you’re done at Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World, Cypress Gardens, Daytona, the Kennedy Space Center and Old Town are all waiting nearby.

The best part is that after your day or night out, you get to come home to Tropical Palms. Not a tight little hotel room, but a spacious cottage where there’s no one on the other side of the wall, just a friendly neighbor next door. So bring your bike and your Sea-doo and all your toys because you’ll want to play here — which makes Tropical Palms the best place to get away.

October 10th, 2009 On The Road Again

Clarissa and Floyd Linendoll travel from Salem, in upstate New York to spend the winter t Tropical Palms in their Fleetwood Flair Special Class A motor home. They like to take their time, avoid city traffic and enjoy the fall scenery. Among the stops they’ve made and enjoyed during their years coming to Tropical Palms are Dolly Parton’s Dollywood in the Great Smoky Mountains and the chocolate factory at the sweetest town in America, Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Linendoll’s also “take a tip from Pedro” and stop at South of the Border in North Carolina, “a terrific place to take a break,” according to Floyd. “Clarissa and I enjoy the amusement park and all the restaurants and shops they’ve got there,” he says. Another favorite of theirs is Winchester, West Virginia, a beautiful town filled with history dating back to the Revolutionary War. And the Linendolls always make a stop in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to see their grandson, who’s in Golf College there before completing their journey.

Taking a completely different approach to their trip here, Patti and John Apgar, who have been coming to Tropical for 20 years, drive, by car, straight through from their home in New Haven, Vermont. In 22 hours.

“We got to get down there and see everyone,” John explains. “Get to the warm weather, hang out with the old friends we see every year.”

The only stops the Apgars make along the way during their 22 hour drive are at Cracker barrel restaurants. “We know the menu and like the food, the faces are familiar and if we need to sleep for a hour or two, the parking lot is well lit and we feel safe.”

So the Apgars pack up their Chevy Tahoe and a little 5 x 8 trailer they got this year with tee shirts, shorts, bikes and their grill. According to John, that’s all they need to have a great time for the three months they spend at Tropical every winter.

Got any travel tips, ideas, or suggestions? Join us on Facebook today and let everyone know about your favorite stops along the way. It’s always good to meet up friends when on the road, whether you’re taking your time exploring or making a 22-hour dash.

September 14th, 2009 “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”

Ask Jaden Mackie, 5 or his sister, Jayli, 1½, how they spent their summer vacation and the answer would probably be, “Play.” Ask grand mom Pam, who spent the summer here with them and she’d say, “What didn’t they do? And that includes petting an alligator.”

Most of the time they spent outdoors, playing with friends. Jayli has a tricycle and a little motorized car she drove around in, remote controlled by grand mom. Jaden was with his buddies playing Manhunt, riding his bike or splashing around in the pool.

Pam, who visits in an RV, used to stay at the Disney campground, but says she moved to Tropical Palms because, “There’s every bit as much to do and it’s a lot more economical.” In fact, though she has season passes at Disney, she and the kids had so much fun they spent most of their time right here. Going down slides, riding bikes and a lot of swimming keep the 50-year-old Pam young and young at heart. So do her neighbors.

“It’s feels like family here; like an old fashioned neighborhood. People come for the season, or a weekend or a week and then come back again and again. Everybody looks out for one another. And the staff is always around, helping with whatever they can. So you don’t have to worry about the kids. You know they’re safe. And there’s always something special going on, like a visit from the alligator farm, that’s when the kids got to pet the gators.”

Of course, it does concern Pam a bit that Jaden wants to wrestle one when he gets a little older.

We want to know how you spent your summer vacation at Tropical Palms. Send us your stories and pictures!

Be sure to check out Jaden and Jayli with those alligators on our Facebook page.

June 16th, 2009 On The Road Again

While Helen and Richard Baile live only an hour and a half from Tropical Palms, they spend a lot of time on the road in their 42-foot motor home traveling to dog shows to show their past and present champion Golden Retrievers, Jesse and Gillian. In fact, Helen’s a former president of the Garden State Golden Retriever club. The best part of being on the road for them is meeting friends from all over the country who also travel to the shows, like a friend from Bermuda they ran into in Boston. Walking the dog has its advantages.

Tell us your favorite spot on the road.

June 10th, 2009 Protecting Yourself in the Sun

Sunblock vs. Sunscreen
Just about everyone knows the dangers of spending too much time in the sun and the importance of using either Sunblock or Sunscreen for protection.

But because most people use the terms interchangeably, they don’t know that there’s a big difference between the two products and that they offer very different levels of protection. Knowing the differences can be critical to your wellbeing, especially if you spend a lot of time in the sun.

These days, Sunscreens are more popular because they absorb the UV rays that allow you to tan. Available in inconspicuous creams, lotions and gels, they have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating; the higher the SPF rating, the better the protection the product provides.

It’s important to know that Sunscreen, because it interacts chemically with the skin, needs be applied about 20 minutes before you go outside so it has time to work. And because it won’t keep you from burning, you need to reapply it frequently if you’re outdoors for an extended period of time.

Sunblocks, as their name suggests, reflect harmful UV rays instead of absorbing them like sunscreen. And, unlike sunscreens, sun blocks don’t have SPF ratings because they protect the body from ALL UV rays. At one time Sunblocks could be spotted by their opaque white film, the funny looking white gunk you sometimes see people put on their noses, but new technology has created Sunblocks with particles so tiny, that the opaque film is no longer noticeable.

Okay, here’s where it gets tricky. Some sunscreens with SPF numbers of 15 or higher are erroneously refereed to as Sunblocks. If you want a Sunblock, don’t buy a package with a SPF number because a true Sunblock won’t need it.
